Environmental/Social Impact Assessment and Permitting

Understanding a proposed project’s potential environmental and social impacts and regulatory constraints is critical to the development of timely and cost-effective project plans, evaluative studies, sound engineering designs, effective stakeholder management and successful permitting.

By anticipating and addressing permit requirements early on in the project design, we help implement a permitting strategy, development schedule and mitigation plans that expedite permit acquisition and compliance. Expert regulatory negotiations throughout the project help resolve technical and external stakeholder issues and create favorable permit conditions while achieving the ultimate goals of maintaining project schedules and ensuring compliance.

This method has contributed to successful projects for a broad range of government, energy (oil and gas, wind, solar, tidal), industrial, waste disposal, utilities, mining and real-estate clients worldwide. For example, our thorough approach helped us prepare one of Australia’s largest and most comprehensive environmental impact statements and technical studies for a mining expansion project.

Across our broad impact analysis, assessment and permitting practice, our experience serves to achieve our clients’ goals, ensuring they are operating according to their own business requirements as well as complying with regulatory requirements.

Environmental Due Diligence Assessment

Are you involved in acquisitions, divestments, portfolio management or development projects? If so, how important is it to you to understand the potential environmental liabilities, costs and opportunities associated with your projects?

A very simple and effective tool that can be used to identify and mitigate your commercial risks is an Environmental Due Diligence (EDD) assessment.

In any acquisition or divestment, be it a single property or portfolio of properties, the optimal scenario is to commence with a fit-for-purpose EDD assessment as early as possible in the process. This will add value by identifying, characterising and quantifying environmental liability (e.g. soil or groundwater contamination) and thereby strengthening your position in any negotiations with the buyer or seller.

EmiAfrica has developed a very simple approach to EDD assessment that allows you to choose the level of assessment required, depending on your needs. In simple terms it is a Decision Tree that asks a series of yes/no questions to quickly determine what level of assessment will best suit your needs.

The EmiAfrica EDD process follows a tiered approach, where you can select either a Tier 1, 2 or 3 EDD assessment.

The work streams associated with the Tier 1, 2 and 3 assessments have been broadly divided into the following categories:

  • Desk Studies
  • Site Work
  • Risk Assessment
  • Commercial Liability Assessment
  • Recommendations

The specific scope items (i.e. tasks) associated with each work stream are either a standard or optional offering in a particular tier.

What happens if you are not certain?

Speak with to EmiAfrica expert for consultation on what options will address your specific needs and add the greatest value.

EmiAfrica’s advice is centred around a risk-based approach to due diligence and the experienced team is readily able to find solutions that balance environmental protection and the commercial realities inherent in acquisitions, divestments and portfolio management.

A major benefit of EmiAfrica’s tiered approach to EDD is that you only pay for those scope elements that are directly applicable to your project.

Scientific Research

“We are immensely proud of this collaborative piece of work between industry and academia, and with excellent progress in the project’’

Our research is drawn from the Biology, Geography, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences as well as other programs within EmiAfrica. The research also draws on adjunct professors and research associates from universities, non-government groups, and government organizations, such as the University of Lubumbashi.

3.10.1 CO2

EmiAfrica provides a range of solutions that can help your business meet critical emissions reductions targets. Whether you plan to expand your existing sustainability plan, or are building one from scratch. From ultra-low carbon fuels to power your existing fleets, to permanent removal of your carbon emissions, we work with you to create a custom set of solutions for your needs.

EmiAfrica is leading research on methods for GHG management plan, GHG inventory, Carbon footprint for project, directly capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into mine tailings, which will help mining operations offset their greenhouse gas emissions. We are investigating how waste from mining operations can be used to capture and store carbon dioxide in the DRC.

3.10.2 Movement patterns of fish using acoustic telemetry

EmiAfrica is studying the movement patterns of fish in Changalele River, where the species has undergone substantial changes in population dynamics and life history following species invasions.  Acoustic telemetry involves implanting fish with tags that emit a unique ID that is detected on receivers placed in the lake as the fish swim by.  We are working on an exciting and important project that makes use of one of the largest & newest acoustic telemetry arrays.

3.10.3 Chemical Property and Environmental Fate Modelling

Our Research involves application of theory to prediction and modelling of chemical fate in the environment, and the estimation of physico-chemical properties from quantum chemical calculations and other approaches. Current projects include fate of Mercury fates in a large-scale ecosystem model, modelling partitioning in complex media such as soils and biomaterials, and indoor air exchange with dust and dirt films.

Our project is examining Hg contamination in lake and river sediments and determine the proportion with which legacy Hg contributes to current Hg levels. We are also assessing the bioaccumulation and relationship between Hg in surface sediments and Hg in fish by determining Hg concentrations and isotope ratios in amphibian, reptiles and Fish.
